Haitian cuisine
Haitian cuisine is a delicious and flavorful blend of traditional and modern dishes that reflect the country’s rich cultural heritage. With influences from African, French, and Caribbean cultures, Haitian cuisine offers various flavors and ingredients that are sure to please any palate.

Traditional New Year’s Day fare in Haiti includes “soup joumou,” a pumpkin-based soup. The practice is believed to have begun during a time when Haitian slaves were forbidden from eating their favorite soup. Nonetheless, it became a symbol of freedom after the revolution and Haiti’s independence.
“banana fritters” and “acra” are two well-known examples of traditional Haitian treats. Acra is a deep-fried dough made from shredded green plantains and flour, and banana fritters are deep-fried dough balls made from mashed bananas and flour. Both go well with a refreshing beverage.
Spices, flavors, and condiments in Haitian cooking are as well-loved as the dishes themselves. The spice combination “epis” (often found in marinades and soups) and the spicy pickled cabbage and carrot condiment “pikliz” (typically found as a side dish or atop sandwiches) are two examples.
Drinks like kleren, an alcoholic beverage derived from sugarcane, and ginger beer, a non-alcoholic beverage made from ginger, sugar, and water, are staples in traditional Haitian cuisine. There are also numerous well-known alcoholic beverages and soft drinks to choose from.
In sum, Haiti’s rich cultural legacy is reflected in the country’s cuisine, which is a delectable fusion of traditional and modern foods. Food is plentiful, ranging from the standard rice and beans to hearty stews and soups.
